What’s the question?
In the sermon this past Sunday, I recounted the story of my friend inviting me to view the wall of the men’s bathroom at the place we were having lunch. Written on the wall was, “Jesus is the answer.” below this statement written in a different color and by a different person (the writing was different) was “if Jesus is the answer what is the question?” Swirling around these two were many, many questions some silly, some thought provoking and some heart wrenching. Here was an ongoing dialogue of who is Jesus and what it means to live out our faith. Much to my surprise later that Sunday while in the church library, someone in the meeting pointed at the dry erase board. The board read, “If Jesus is the answer, what is your question? The dialog continues. . .what is your question?

That is a great question. . . I’m hopeful as the church engages in transformation. . .leads to another question, how are we, the church, going to let transformation take hold?

When I was in high school, I found SCUMC through youth group. It took one invitation to MYF, and I was hooked. Donna Everhart, Kathy & Charlie Gray, Bob Rhodes (and others) made me feel welcome and wanted. I came back every Sunday for two years…and then I came back again 15 years later.
I think it is really important to be a place where youth feel wanted and welcome and be a place where they can have fun in a safe environment. And, I think that when you establish those relationships in the formative teen years, the impressions made last a very long time.
