The chance to pass on the faith, to explain our faith to youth and to engage our youth’s questions about faith, is an exciting and humbling experience. Our youth are deep thinkers with new insights. They question how and why we believe what we believe and how and why we do what we do. I have the humble task of teaching the class on sacraments. Specifically, I teach about the two sacraments in the United Methodist Church, baptism and Communion.  Sacraments are outward visible signs that carry in them the invisible grace of God. Through participating in the sacraments God lavishly drenches us in grace, forgiveness, love, acceptance and peace. Baptism and Communion follow the two criteria for being a sacrament; Jesus had to have participated in the event and Jesus had to tell the disciples (and us) to do the same. Yet, I am always mindful to teach our youth that God’s grace is not limited or confined to the sacraments (which our youth already sense through life experience). Many events in life are signs of God’s grace; we call that being sacramental. A particular piece of music, a moving sermon, a special relationship can all convey God’s grace and invite us to partake of God’s kindness, love, forgiveness, acceptance and peace.

 I could not help but find baseball sacramental, especially, these past two weeks. As most of you know, my family members are very loyal Yankee fans. Being a Yankee fan means that you are not only for the Yankees but you are against the Red Sox’s, The Boston Red Sox’s. Yet, the minute the Boston Marathon bombing happened, Yankee fans gathered around Boston fans and spoke with their compassion and support. It is as if their actions said, “Yes we are Yankee fans but our heated rivalry will not stop us from offering love and support for our fellow human beings.” Yankee fans embracing Boston fans is sacramental, a sign of God’s grace, love, kindness, compassion and acceptance. The second was the release of the movie “42” about the life of Jackie Robinson and his courageous journey into breaking the race barrier in baseball.

This Sunday we will explore the above baseball stories and more seeking to learn what baseball can teach us about our faith and God’s grace.
